Words of Wisdom

After meeting with my chiropractor and my physical therapist last week, I thought I would share a few things they said that I thought were really interesting.  For me, they really rang true, but everyone is different- so take it with a grain of salt.  (Worth a grain of salt?  How does that saying actually go?)

They both asked when I felt my injury, and after telling them I ran 20 miles on a treadmill and then I could tell the next morning when I got up (I did the run right before bed), they both looked at me like- DUH!

My Chiropractor said that treadmills are dangerous because you are never setting your foot on solid ground.

I thought that was so interesting.  I've always felt like my form is really off (as opposed to just off) when I run on the treadmill, so this made complete sense to me.

PT thought I was a fool for running that far on the treadmill, and then he told me that when you are running, your feet should fall in a straight line.  For example, if you are running on the road where there is a painted line, both of your feet should be landing on that line.

Interesting!

And the last bit of wisdom for today- Cheeseburger Pizza is.... surprisingly good!  Don't knock it 'til you try it.

I recently got told by my chiro that because I don't have great biomechanics I basically gave myself RSI in my right ankle by running on the treadmill ... so its out on grass for me as much as possible :-)

My ITB started the first run off a treadmill run. I think your chiro is into something. I've only run on a treadmill about 5 times since last year. I'm mortified that the treadmill will bring it back.

Ok, now onto the important part....cheesburger pizza! Did you fix that beauty yourself!? Recipe!! Recipe cries the people!! :)

Whaaat?! I would have never thought that both feet should be landing on the same line! I guess my form is WAY off too!! Not going to lie...that pizza looks sort of gross!! Maybe it's because I am not into cheeseburgers! Take out the "burger" and I'll eat it with the extra cheese ;)

I'm so glad to have a real reason never to run on the treadmill! I'm sorry you're not feeling great again!

I am so happy you posted this. I was going back through my latest training cycle and the only thing different I did before the injury hit was running a long run on the treadmill. I thought it was that but then felt dumb... hello EMZ is on the treadmill every day right? It makes sense what your PT said though! :)

NO ONE.....NO ONE Should have to be running 20 miles on the TM!!!! my running partner says her injury goes away on the TM....weird we are all so different. I'm all for agreeing with your PT.

The pizza isn't bad.......but then again I got the Flu the next day.....I'll blame the PIZZA!! Flu a week before a marathon is NO FUN!!

ha ha totally laughing about the pizza! I have been making fun of that pizza since the very first advertisement. Glad to know it got your seal of approval. :)

So so torn on the treadmill topic. Some say treadmill is good beacuase of the soft surface, some say it comprimises form? I think my friend Jake said it best "I'll never start running on a treadmill until races are determined on a treadmill."

That's pretty interesting about the treadmill! I run on it a lot - mostly because I don't have too much choice day to day - but I also notice my stride is much shorter on the TM. Oddly though, when I had ankle issues a while back it was much better to run on the treadmill than anywhere else!

I heard that some countries torture prisoners of war by making them run on a treadmill.

Your experience is yet another example of why treadmills are evil.

Hope you get feeling better soon!

this makes SO much sense. about the pizza ;) haha jk. no really. i swear the TM makes me feel decrepit sometimes. like really. and i never know what it is. i feel more natural outside and all awkward and like i forgot how to run on the TM. you just convinced me to run outside instead of the TM tomorrow. thank you!

That is so interesting about the straight line business. I had my chiropractor tell me that is what's WRONG with my form. My feet land under my pelvis instead of under my hips which = weak hips, and can lead to knee trouble, back trouble, etc. He told me to run with my feet a little farther apart, which makes sense to me. Who's right? I am so confused now. :( YUM pizza.

Wow I never thought of that! That's really interesting about the same line thing! I find it hard to walk in a straight line, I don't think I'll ever run in one!!!

I tried to watch my feet in the TM tonight and I think they did fall in sort of a straight line. I am eager to watch my feet on the road.

I am sorry your TM run messed you up! The TM has saved my bacon and my training schedule and I always feel less "pounded" after I hop off.

Cheeseburger pizza=barf. I love you, though.

Interesting - another excuse to never run on a treadmill! ;)
